About Us
In September 1999, five Muslim Latinos came together to form a Spanish study group in Los Angeles, Cal., to deepen their understanding of Islam, share aspects of Latin American culture, and provide spiritual support to the new Muslim Latino. in his transition from Christianity to Islam. In a short time, more interested people arrived asking for information about Islam in Spanish. This led to the creation of a structured program for teaching Islam in our language. The formation of LALMA as an organization took place in the year 2000. The members of LALMA are, for the most part, immigrants from different Latin American countries, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico , Paraguay and Peru.
LALMA is a non-profit civic organization of Latino Muslims dedicated to teaching and disseminating the traditional knowledge of Islam within a contemporary context and promoting a better understanding of the Islamic faith among the Spanish-speaking non-Muslim community. LALMA has a program of classes in Spanish on the fundamentals, creed and history of Islam, interpretation of the Qur'an, biography of the Prophet Muhammad and introduction to the Arabic language. LALMA also offers guidance and spiritual support to new Muslims and advocates social justice according to Islamic values.
LALMA distributes Islamic literature in Spanish, which includes works on the translation of the message of the Qur'an, biography of the Prophet Muhammad, hadith (sayings and deeds of the Prophet) and contemporary issues in Islam. LALMA also offers special classes on the various worship practices in Islam, such as prayer (the ritual of prayer and its requirements) and the fast of the month of Ramadan, and workshops on leadership training and public presentation of Islam. LALMA provides support and guidance to Muslim Latinos to start other study groups in Spanish at various Islamic centers in Southern California.
At LALMA we strive to provide a family and hospitable environment to anyone interested in finding out or learning about Islam. Our classes are open to all public.
